Title: Breathtaking
Title: Breathtaking
Description: On a misty and overcast July morning, a pod of Humpback whales enjoys an early breakfast in Resurrection Bay off the coast of Kenai Fjords. In the background, the shadow of Rugged Island looms. Two whales can be seen in the distance, taking breaths before a deep dive, while in the foreground, the fluke of another whale is already descending. Coastal birds, including seagulls, are in a frenzy over the feeding zone, knowing the whales are bubble-net feeding and might leave behind some leftovers. In fact, it was the birds that led us to the whales; our boat captain recognized the abundance of birds as a sign and was proven right. This feeding frenzy lasted about half an hour, with approximately 15-18 whales working together. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in action was truly a treat.
Humpback whales are known for their extensive migrations, traveling thousands of miles each year. In the northern hemisphere, they feed in cold waters before heading south to breed in warmer climates. The opposite occurs in the southern hemisphere, with whales migrating north for feeding and south for breeding. As a result, whales from each hemisphere never cross paths.
